The mechanism, explained properly
Dry skin and dull hair
Hard water doesn't dry your skin directly — the soap scum it forms does. Here's the mechanism, and where in NC it actually applies.
Hard water does not dry your skin directly. What it does is react with soap: calcium and magnesium bind to the surfactants in soap and shampoo and form an insoluble curd — the same soap scum that rings your bathtub — which does not rinse away cleanly and sits on skin and hair.
That residue is what disrupts the skin barrier and leaves hair feeling coated and dull. It also explains the most common complaint people have after installing a softener: that the water feels slippery. It is not slippery. That is what your skin feels like without a film of soap curd on it.
Like every other hardness symptom, whether this applies to you depends on where in North Carolina you live.
Where this actually applies
In the Triangle, at 6–12 GPG, this mechanism is real and people notice the difference within days of softening. In Charlotte at 1–4 GPG and Wilmington at 2.9 GPG, the water is already soft enough that soap rinses cleanly — so if your skin is dry there, hardness is not the explanation, and a softener will not change it.
| City | Hardness | Disinfectant | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wake Forest | 8–12 GPG | chlorine | Neuse River |
| Apex | 7–9 GPG | chlorine | Jordan Lake (Cary system) |
| Cary | 7–9 GPG | chlorine | Jordan Lake |
| Raleigh | 7–10 GPG | chlorine | Neuse River / Falls Lake |
| Chapel Hill | 6–9 GPG | chlorine | University Lake / Cane Creek |
| Durham | 6–9 GPG | chlorine | Lake Michie / Little River |
| Wilmington | 2.9 GPG | chlorine | Cape Fear River — CFPUA Sweeney plant (deep-bed GAC) |
| Charlotte | 1–4 GPG | chloramine | Catawba chain — Mountain Island Lake / Lake Norman |
What actually fixes it
Where hardness is genuinely high, ion-exchange softening removes the minerals that form the curd, so soap rinses clean. Most people also find they use noticeably less shampoo and body wash afterwards, for the same reason they use less dishwasher detergent — hardness was consuming a large share of the product before it could lather. If chlorine is also a factor in skin irritation, carbon filtration addresses that separately; the two are different problems with different solutions.

Common questions
- Why does softened water feel slippery?
- Because your skin is actually clean. What most people read as 'squeaky clean' in hard water is a thin layer of soap curd. Without hardness minerals to form it, soap rinses away completely, and that is the sensation people notice.
- Will a water softener fix my eczema?
- We would not claim that. Studies on softened water and eczema have produced mixed results, and a major UK trial found no significant benefit for childhood eczema. What softening reliably does is remove soap curd. Whether that helps a specific skin condition is a question for a dermatologist, not a water treatment company.
- Does hard water cause hair loss?
- No. Hard water can leave hair feeling coated, dull and harder to manage, but there is no credible evidence linking it to hair loss. Anyone making that claim to sell you a system is not being straight with you.
